School for Justice

In Nepal and India, Free a Girl USA has set up the pioneering School for Justice program.

Around 1.2 million children in India are victims of sexual exploitation every year. Over 12,000 Nepali underaged girls are trafficked to India for sexual exploitation each year. In recent years, there has also been explosive growth in Nepali girls being trafficked and sexually exploited in Nepal itself. Many survivors have been rescued from illegal brothels by Free a Girl, in cooperation with the local authorities. However, the offenders are rarely punished for their crimes. In order to bring lasting change, the survivors need to be empowered to fight against their perpetrators.

FIGHTING IMPUNITY

To fight the impunity of the offenders, in 2017 Free a Girl founded the School for Justice in India. In 2019, we opened a second school in India and a third one in Nepal. The School for Justice is a program where survivors and the daughters of survivors of sexual exploitation are trained to become the best lawyers, paralegals, police officers, socials workers, sociologist and journalists in their country, so they can join us in the fight against sexual exploitation of children.

CHANGE THE SYSTEM

Our aim is to educate the survivors. This will allow them to bring offenders to justice, spark the conversation as change agents, develop support in the community, change the system from within, fight impunity, and raise awareness about sexual exploitation of children on national and international platforms.

“As an innovative model of social inclusion, the Special Rapporteur has been impressed by the work carried out by the Free a Girl NGO, in the context of the School for Justice project implemented in India and Nepal.” – Report to the UN Human Rights Council by the Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons, Dr. Maria Grazia Giammarinaro

HOW IT WORKS

When a girl completes level 10 of education, she can enroll in the School for Justice program. She receives support, training, tuition and mentoring to reach level 12, the level that’s required to study at university. Along with our partner organizations, Free a Girl provides safe accommodation and funds all of the students’ study expenses. The School for Justice collaborates with the best universities in India and Nepal to guarantee a first-rate education, and ensure equal opportunities to become successful professionals.
